What is the UK-Masonry Mailing List?

It is an e-mail address that relays messages to a regulated list of subscribers who are interested in developing and sharing their knowledge of Freemasonry.

How to subscribe.

If you are a Master Mason CLICK HERE and complete the Application Form ensuring all details are completed and accurate. Once accepted don't forget to go to your account administration page and select what Topics you want to receive. You MUST select All:.

How to send a message to the entire mailing list?

Postings are restricted to subscribers. If you want to send a message to the entire UK-Masonry mailing list, read the appropriate instructions below and then send it to this address: uk-masonry@bluecob.com

Your acceptance onto this list is not an automatic process. In most circumstances your application will be complete in 24 hours however, it could take longer especially if the administrator is busy or away from home.

DO NOT PANIC and resend your subscription. If you have not heard after a few days contact the administrator by Clicking Here.

What if my message doesn‘t appear on the list?

If you send an e-mail to the list and it doesn‘t appear straight away there could be any number of reasons. Mostly messages will appear within a few hours of posting however, it has been known for them to take a day or two if there is a problem with one or more of the internet gateways

DO NOT RESEND YOUR MESSAGE!!

If you think that maybe your message didn‘t get through, then check your Sent Box and check your headings … 95% of failures occur here. Most often it is because there was no Topic: placed before the Subject of your message - or the colon was missing from the Topic: e.g. Help instead of Help: - The colon is an important part of your Subject and must be included.

What if I get too much e-mail?

The UK-Masonry mailing list could eventually carry 50 + messages per DAY. Before you go and unsubscribe, you should know about some other options available to you.

To set yourself nomail / unsubscribe / digest / set topics etc. go to your Subscription Page as shown in your welcome e-mail and make the necessary changes.

Alternative e-mail addresses

Why not establish an e-mail account just for receiving UK-Masonry mailings?.  Many commercial services, allow you to have multiple e-mail addresses for each account for no additional charge. Ask your service provider if you are not sure whether this option is available or not

Mail Filter

Your internet software may enable you to use a mail filter. You can set it up so that any message containing the string “UK-Masonry” gets moved to a seperate file, rather than going to your main mailbox.

Topics

The following TOPICS: are available to prefix all subject lines. By default they all will be selected for you so if you don't want to receive some of the Topics you will have to de-select them via your Subscription Page:

* LODGE: Specifically for Lodge matters. i.e. Use like The Risings and Announcements.
* TRADE: Buy, sell or swap or give away. Items must be legal!
BOARD: Festive Board activities. Speeches, Toasts, General Matters etc.
EDUCATION: Masonic research and education.
SOCIAL: All social matters. i.e. Announcements, Congratulations, Invites, Births, Marriages.
MASONIC: The majority of messages to this list will probably be via this Topic.
GENERAL:

All areas not covered in other Topics. If there is a mix of subjects in your message of which one is Masonic then you must use the Masonic: Topic rather than this one. Use wisely as this will be carefully monitored for misuse.

* HELP:  If you need help on any matter other than Masonic, this is the Topic to use.
** All: Strictly for the Administrator and Moderators. DO NOT USE.

Special Notes

* All items posted under Topics LODGE, TRADE & HELP must carry the instruction, “Reply to Sender Only - Do Not Reply Via The List”.

If a Brother writes “ Replies to be sent privately”, MAKE SURE YOU DO!

If there are some Topics that you do not want to receive de-select them via your Subscription Page.

** Strictly for postings from the Administrator

IDIOTS GUIDE TO POSTING (First Posting)

  • Ensure you select the right Topic from above and insert a colon ':' after it. Do not put a space between the Topic and the colon.

  • Insert your subject after the colon.

  • If appropriate (Topics: LODGE, TRADE & HELP) make sure you put in your message 'Reply to sender only - Do not reply via the list'.

  • If you want a private reply i.e. direct to your email address, include the message 'Replies to be sent Privately'.

  • Compose and send your message.

Can you reprint UK-Masonry articles?

  • A condition of posting to this list is that all postings can be reproduced in whatever medium. However you are responsible to ensure that any items, articles etc. are Copyright free or you own the Copyright. You undertake to indemnify this list, Freemasonry for the Millennium, it's administrators and staff against any legal or moral actions being taken as a result of your postings. IF YOU DONT UNDERSTAND WHAT THIS MEANS DONT POST TO THE LIST and e-mail the Administrator for advise.

  • If you do reprint an article, or part of an article, please give credit to its author, and to the UK-Masonry list.

  • If you are submitting an article for the UK-Masonry list and do NOT want it to published elsewhere then you must state this explicitly in your posting otherwise it will be assumed that reproduction is allowed.

Reposting private e-mail

Simple, don‘t do it

When someone is writing to you alone, their comments are private between you and them. You should NEVER repost their private email in a public forum without their permission.

Who administers the list?

David W Oddy - dwo@ukmasonry.co.uk

As a courtesy please do everything you can on your own to solve your problem before asking for help.

First posting

PLEASE READ THIS - IT IS IMPORTANT

Your first posting to the list must be as follows (Cut and Paste it into your message). The Subject for this first posting should be MASONIC: First Posting. Complete the following where necessary:

If you don't post this message you could be excluded from the list. This is a condition of membership.

If you do not have frames operating in your browser and cannot see the above message CLICK HERE and request a text copy.

Special note

All members of the List are required to have an Antivirus Programme installed on their computer and it must be kept up to date.

Quoted text

Since there are often several subject “threads” going on at once, include a SMALL portion of the message you‘re replying to. DO NOT just post 'I agree' or something similar.

Signature

Make sure you sign all your postings correctly. A suggestion is given here:

  • Name, Rank

  • e-mail address

  • Lodge name and number

  • Town (or province) and Grand Lodge if not UGLE

Replying

Be careful with your replies...a common mistake is to send a personal reply back to the entire list. Please check your “To:” and “Cc:” lines before sending the message.

Test messages

NO test messages please. Only post something when you have something to say.

UPPERCASE

Do not use uppercase unless you want to shout at somebody. If this is the case then you will be seriously considered for removal from the list as we, as Freemasons, do not shout. Do we!

Length of message

The list is set to 150 lines maximum message size, exceed this and your message will be rejected!

Read before you post

Check your message carefully before posting. Is the Topic included? Is the colon included? Does my message contribute to the list. Does my message contribute to the argument? Is my message relevant? Is my message really needed? Will it further the argument?

Sending an attached file

NO attachments please

If you have a large file that may be of interest to others post the details on the list and offer to send it to interested parties direct. Do not post it to the list or create an attachment.

Links

  • It is permissable to include links in your postings but must only be to web sites of interest and not used for advertising purposes. No graphics must be used and a discription of what the link refers to must also be included in the posting. If this is abused it will be removed and the offending member could be excluded from the list!

  • If you run your own website you can place a link in your message providing you state that you are the owner or responsible for the website the link is referring to.

  • If you are in any doubt as to the suitability of the link then check with the list administrator first.

Cross Posting

Cross posting is the act of posting the same message to multiple forums, mailing lists, or newsgroups. This is strictly forbidden and could result in any member who cross posts being removed from the list.

It makes sense that postings should be genuine and designed for inclusion specifically to this list. Sending multiple postings to various lists is not just annoying but also insulting. If you don't have anything to bring to this list specifically then don't post! Also copying postings that you have seen elsewhere is also forbidden. You have been warned!

  • Behaviour on the list shall be Masonic at all times.

  • Remember this is not a tyled environment.

  • Post the 'First Posting' message as shown above.

  • Do not get into any arguments or dissagreements with other members. Seek help off list from the Administrator.

  • When replying to postings keep the subject headers intact.

  • Do not post private e-mails to the list.

  • Check your spelling and grammar before posting.

  • Remember that you are posting to a large Masonic audience - keep it relevant.

  • If replying to a posting include a snippet from it - NOT ALL OF IT.

  • Make sure you include your signature i.e. Name, Rank, Lodge, Constitution and e-mail address if not shown in header.

  • Keep messages short and to the point.

  • You must maintain an up to date Virus programme - if the list receives a Virus from you this is one sure way of being excluded!

  • All: messages are strictly for the use of the Administrator and Moderators only. They are not open for discussion and cannot be challenged. If you want to discuss any All: message received do it in private directly to the Administrator but be warned - I don't take prisoners!

  • Ensure that you go to your Subscription Page and select what Topics you want to receive. You MUST select All: (See previous note).

In Conclusion

We acknowledge that these Rules & Regulations may appear confusing but some time spent reading them will soon ensure they become clear. They are designed to make the list professional and not to try and trip up the member. We will not breath fire at anyone who makes a mistake but will gently guide them. It is only those individuals who constantly abuse the Rules who will be reprimanded.

If you need any help or explanation please get in touch and also if you have any suggestions as to how and where we could make these Rules & Regulations more appropriate or perhaps easier to understand then again please contact us.

Enjoy your time on the UK-Masonry Mailing List.
